TAQSIM & DRUM SOLO MASTER CLASS

12noon-3pm : New York City
LIVE MELODIC TAQSIM and LIVE DRUM SOLO for DANCERS
This 3 hour movement class will help dancers prepare for
spontaneous improvisational duets with live Arab musicians
is when the melodic musician improvises, within the classic Arabic pattern, using a specific Maqam scale that bears an emotion and trajectory. Dancers will practice aligning their bodies with the ascending and descending scale, often aided by singing. The classic events within the Taqsim, such as pauses, modulation, connected vs broken notes, and the climax, will all be practiced with live music in class.
almost always requires pure improvisation. It is best explained by someone who is both a dancer and a drummer. It is a dynamic duet moment that can yield astounding excitement, or go painfully awry. The typical patterns and themes of the Arabic style will be practiced live. This includes the most regularly used rhythms, invented phrases, rolls for layered vibration, and how to signal & end together.
