ARABIQA

ARAB MUSIC DANCE & CULTURE with Karim Nagi

School Presentations . Youth & Adult Workshops . Concerts . Teacher Education . Outreach

Karim Nagi is a life long advocate of the Arab cultural arts, and for the embracing of diversity in the American school system. His music and dance provide an uplifting new narrative, representing the ebullient and welcoming nature of Arab & Muslim people. The Arabiqa program arose from the need to counteract stereotypes and prejudicial biases against people from the Arab & Muslim worlds here in America. Whether these biases spawn from media defamation, orientalist caricature, political inequity, or just simple unfamiliarity, Mr. Nagi seeks to familiarize and re-define. Arabiqa has conducted over 500 school assemblies in the USA alone, helping to introduce young audiences to his culture through the joyful and inclusive power of music and dance. If we can play music and dance together, then we can also be friends.

ARABIQA Live ASSEMBLY

Mixed grades and age groups are welcome. Karim is a native Egyptian and Arabic speaker with perfect English. He performs on multiple percussion and strings instruments from around the Arab world. He demonstrates such instruments as the Duff, Riqq, Buzuq, Sagat, Mijwiz and Tabla. He orates the history of each instrument, reviews how they are made, and writes out the name in Arabic script, with pronunciation. He alters his costume throughout the show, robing in both modern and authentic clothing and explaining how to wrap the kufiya headpieces. Karim incorporates two styles of Arab Folk Dance, including the dance of sticks and stomps, giving a lively rendition. He includes the audience with rhythmic clapping, word pronunciation, line dancing, and spontaneous surveys & questions. With humor, acrobatics, articulation, and masterful audience incorporation, Karim makes a point with his percussion.

His goal is to give these young audiences an uplifting impression of Arab and Muslim culture, beyond the news headlines of terror and uprising. As an Arab-American, Karim bridges the East-West cultural gap in the most profound yet entertaining way. Karim also has a more articulate version for College, University and Adult general audiences. (Duration flexible from 30minutes - 1.25hours.)

ARABIQA VIRTUAL ASSEMBLY

Arabiqa was an early adopter of the virtual medium. Karim utilizes multiple cameras, lights, great sound for voice & instruments, and a strong understanding of the screen presentation style. The virtual program has the same content as the live assembly. It is a great and more affordable option for schools that are in any region around the USA. It can be fully live, allowing for students Q/A and personalized to each school. There is also a recording rental available, for fully flexible scheduling.

WORKSHOPS in MUSIC & DANCE

ARAB MUSIC & VOCAL ENSEMBLE
Proficiency on a musical instrument is helpful, or a willingness to sing. Arabic instrumental and vocal repertoire will be taught strictly by ear and without sheet music (the oral tradition). Arabic music uses an Eastern modal system called "Maqam". Although it is distinct from Western Music, a Western-trained musician can learn to render the particular music on their instrument. A music group of varying string, wind and percussion instruments can participate. Singers will be taught Arabic diction, and the pronunciation, in relation to the dialect of the lyrics. This workshop is suitable for regular music classes, school orchestras, jazz ensembles, choirs, or small ensembles.

ARAB FOLK DANCE
This class is an introduction to the traditional group dances from the Arab world. These dances are primarily unisex, and emphasize synchronicity and group cohesion. This workshop includes Dabka Line Dance, Basic Tahteeb/Assaya Cane Dance, and the group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices. Each dance is taught efficiently as an introduction to the style, and is an initiation into possible future study. These dances are less glamorous than the performance-oriented heroism of the solo dances found in the Arab world. These are the dances done by "The People" in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings. They can be taught to dancers at any level, as both a cultural and artistic experience. The group movements and concepts can later be extrapolated into performance-calibre skills and themes.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT where MUSLIMS LIVE

NEW PROGRAM: Experience the music and movement traditions of various Islamic communities. Populations in Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Western China and other regions have rich participatory traditions where music & movement are vibrant, yet often go un-reported in Western media and education. Karim Nagi guides students in a participatory experience of music and dance from different Muslim communities around the world. Karim shares songs & dances from communities in both the Near and Far East, including endangered populations. This program is a perfect opportunity for children to enjoy a meaningful and distinctive aspect of the Muslim community‚Äôs life.
Development of this program was originally funded by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts and Young Audiences of New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania United We Create initiative.
